Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are asking voter to choose between an immigration crackdown and reproductive rights As their race for the US presidency comes down to the wire, each major candidate has leaned heavily on a favorite theme -- abortion rights for Democrat Kamala Harris and border security for Republican Donald Trump. In Arizona, their ideological duel has reached a white-hot peak, with both topics the subject of fiercely debated ballot referendums. And in this key southwestern state -- where the billionaire Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020 by a tiny margin of about 10,500 votes -- every ballot truly will count. In the mid-sized city of Tucson, hundreds of volunteers in orange T-shirts were going door-to-door to try to persuade voters to back a ballot measure to inscribe abortion rights in the state constitution -- and, while they're at it, to vote for Vice President Harris. To Grace Ireland, a 26-year-old activist, the abortion restrictions imposed by several Republican-controlled states amount to "a public health crisis that Donald Trump and the Republicans have created." She added, "Democrats and Kamala Harris are trying to push us forward and protect women's health care and protect our democracy and protect all people." Une pancarte barrée du slogan "L'indifférence aux élections est dangereuse", à Tucson, en Arizona, le 16 octobre 2024 Since 2022, when the US Supreme Court ended the constitutional protection of federal abortion rights, Ireland, a registered nurse, has worked in several states where abortion is banned or severely limited. Those restrictions have had sometimes disastrous consequences for women having problem pregnancies or carrying nonviable fetuses when doctors refuse to treat them. "Women are going septic and dying because they cannot receive the care that they need," she told AFP. - 'Abortion is murder' - As Ireland carries her message to potential voters, she noted, particularly to young people who may be less likely to vote, that it was Donald Trump who appointed the three justices who tipped the Supreme Court against abortion rights. Donald Trump lors d'un meeting à Tempe, en Arizona, le 24 octobre 2024 "It's important to reiterate that Donald Trump and these abortion bans are one and the same," Ireland said. But in Tucson there is little unanimity among young voters. "I do think that abortion is murder," said Pedro Lopez, a 20-year-old college student. "There are cases of incest or rape" that merit exceptions, he conceded, "but that's very small." He also worries about the flow of undocumented migrants that have entered the country from Mexico during the Biden-Harris administration. "People that are entering the United States illegally... should be sent back to where they came from," he said. "My grandparents migrated from Mexico to the United States, and they did it the right way." So he plans not only to vote for Trump, but to back the proposal to let local law enforcement detain, arrest and prosecute anyone suspected of having entered the country illegally -- powers normally reserved to the border police who work for the federal government. "I know people that work for the Border Patrol, and they're really upset because this current administration has really tied their hands up. They're not really able to do anything," Lopez said. - Mixed impact - The major political parties see the competing referendums as offering an opportunity to mobilize more people to vote -- on ballot questions at the very heart of the two presidential campaigns. Anti-abortion activists demonstrate outside a clinic in Phoenix, Arizona on April 18, 2024 But the referendums may not have the clear impact on the race for the White House that activists hope. Polls show Trump and Harris running neck-and-neck in Arizona, with the Republican holding a very narrow lead. Both ballot questions, meantime, have drawn strong support and both appear likely to pass. So the abortion issue may not be "helping Democrats in the way that they would hope," said Jenny Brian, a professor of bioethics at Arizona State University. Many Republican women will vote both to protect abortion rights and to bring Trump back to the White House, Brian said. Though abortion is sometimes framed as a Democrat vs. Republican issue, the Republican Party includes "a broad spectrum of views on the topic," an issue that also raises conservatives' concerns about "government interference," she added. The same dynamic applies to immigration, with the tougher language on the Arizona ballot question finding support not just among Trump Republicans but also "moderates and even many Democrats," said John Kavanagh, a Republican and an Arizona state senator. The 74-year-old Kavanagh is unimpressed by Harris's recent toughening on migration, specifically her promise to maintain the partial closing of the border Biden ordered in recent months. The vice president, Kavanagh said, is "running away faster from her open-border policy than an illegal immigrant that runs away from the Border Patrol."

A billionaire couple have won the right to remove a single tree from the driveway of their lavish $20million mansion after being blocked by their local council.  Paul Holmes a Court, the son of Australia's first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, and his wife Zara had been at loggerheads with their local council over a request to remove a single peppermint tree growing in the middle of their driveway. The couple bought the four-bedroom mansion in the affluent, tree-lined suburb overlooking Perth's Freshwater Bay for $20.1million in August. They wanted to remove the tree but the Shire of Peppermint Grove refused the request on the grounds the tree was not dead or deceased.  'We are very lucky to live here, but I have to say that the tree placement is unusual,' Ms Holmes a Court previously told a council meeting.  'I'm quite a reasonable and rational person, but a tree in the middle of the driveway makes it quite tricky to reverse out.' The couple enjoyed a breakthrough at a council meeting last week after an alternative motion was unanimously passed that allowed the tree to be removed on the condition they paid a $2,500 bond before any work was done on the driveway. They will also need to plant two replacement trees on their property. Paul Holmes a Court (pictured) is the son of Australia's first billionaire, famed tycoon Robert Holmes a Court, who died suddenly of heart failure at the age of 53 Paul Holmes à Court and his wife Zara won a council battle to remove a peppermint tree (pictured) from the driveway of their $20million mansion Ms Holmes a Court previously claimed the tree's odd placement also made it difficult to spot cars turning the corner at a nearby intersection with Bay View Terrace. After the motion to remove the tree was passed at the meeting, councillor Douglas Jackson said it was a 'good outcome'. 'I think it meets both the owners' wants, or expectation, but also matches the council's needs at the same time by ensuring that there is tree cover on the verge of that property,' he said. Peppermint Grove is hoping to implement a policy that would even make it an offence to damage or remove any mature trees on private property without council approval. Last month, WA Planning Minister John Carey said he hoped the Shire of Peppermint Grove would 'take a common sense approach' to the issue. 'This is part of the challenge that we do have with local government. I've always been on the record that we need local governments to take a common sense approach to issues,' Mr Carey told the West Australian.  'And I understand people are passionate about trees. But ultimately, we do need local governments to assess the situation and find pragmatic outcomes.' According to the online listing for the four-bedroom, four-bathroom mansion - which is built on a corner block along the banks of the Swan River - the sprawling Federation-style property was built in around 1904.  The Holmes à Court property was built in around 1904 in Federation 'Arts and Crafts' style The home boast an unparalleled view of the Swan River overlooking Fresh Water Bay 'Designed in the rare Federation 'Arts and Crafts' style, the home has retained all its elegance and splendour via lofty ceilings, sweeping verandas, charming decorative arches, casement-style sash windows, and walls of French doors that bathe the home in light, reflecting river views beyond,' the listing said. The property also features 'Plush Champagne-hued carpets' and 'cobble-stoned remote garage to accommodate six cars, abundant storage, gym area, double vanity rain-shower bathroom and climate-controlled wine cellar.' Mr Holmes a Court is the chief executive of prize-winning wine label Vasse Felix and the brother of Peter Holmes à Court, who once jointly owned of the South Sydney Rabbitohs with Russell Crowe, and climate philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court. An invitation to lunch at Caviar Kaspia was, once upon a time, an offer you simply didn't refuse. Providing, of course, that the bill was on someone else. Because caviar, smeared on blinis or piled high on baked potatoes, sure didn't come cheap. There may have been other things on the menu, but no one paid them much heed. This was all about lashings of the black stuff. Caviar Kaspia's signature baked potato and caviar: ‘there are few better dishes on earth…only the price, at just under £150, is ridiculous' Caviar Kaspia popped her final tin about two decades back. And that site, hidden down a smart Mayfair mews, was taken over by Gavin Rankin (who used to be the boss), and transformed into the brilliant Bellamy's. It prospers to this day. Kaspia, on the other hand, went quiet. Until last year, when she reopened as a members' club in another Mayfair backstreet. But a £2,000 a year membership fee proved hard to swallow, meaning the doors were opened to the great unwashed. Which is how we find ourselves sitting in a rather handsome - albeit near empty - dining room, lusciously lavish, under the stern gaze of a stern painting of a very stern man. The soft, crepuscular gloom is broken up by the glare of table lamps, indecorously bright, while a loud soundtrack of indolent, indeterminate beats throbs in the background. The whole place is scented with gilded ennui. Our fellow diners are two young South Korean women of pale, luminescent beauty, clad in diaphanous couture. They don't speak, rather communicate entirely via camera phone. Pose, click, check, filter, post. Immaculate waiters hover in the shadows. We sip ice-cold vodka, and eat a £77 caviar and smoked-salmon Kaspia croque monsieur that tastes far better than it ought to. Next door, a large table fills with a glut of the noisily, glossily confident. We're looked after by a wonderful French lady of such effervescent charm and charisma that had she burst into an impromptu performance of ‘Willkommen', we would have barely blinked. Baked potatoes, skin as crisp as parchment, insides whipped savagely hard with butter and sour cream, are a study in tuber art. A cool jet-black splodge of oscietra caviar, gently saline, raises them to the sublime. Only the price, at just under £150 each, is ridiculous. But there are few better dishes on earth. I'd eat this every day if I could. But I can't. Obviously. That's the problem with caviar. One taste is never enough. About £200 per head. Russell Crowe has argued that the rise of independent politicians are better representing the views of everyday Australians, unlike the two-party-dominated system in the United States.  The Oscar-winning actor made the claim in response to podcast host Joe Rogan  complaining that Americans were 'completely trapped in the two-party system'. 'We have the same sort of situation, but we have a very interesting thing that's happening in Australia at the moment, which is the rise of independents,' Crowe countered. 'The main parties have to deal with the fact those independents have to bring a non-party-line series of points to the argument. 'And it's working well. It's working for us. In that it's making both of the main parties re-examine who they are and what they stand for. Rogan mused 'we could use that here, for sure', highlighting how US politics is completely dominated by the Democrat and Republican parties. There are other parties, including the Green, Libertarian, and Reform parties, but these receive vanishingly few votes in comparison. Independent candidates can also stand and have been known to perform well on occasion.  The Oscar-winning actor (pictured ) made the observation in response to podcast host Joe Rogan who complained that Americans were 'completely trapped in the two-party system' Joe Rogan (pictured) is one of the most powerful media figures in the world  Civil rights opponent George Wallace ran a third-party campaign in the 1968 US election which saw him garner 10 million votes and take five southern states, while another disaffected Democrat, Strom Thurmond, in 1948 carried four southern states on a similarly racist platform but with only a million votes. The nephew of a president, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was poised to get on the ballot in dozens of states as an independent candidate before he pulled out and backed Republican Donald Trump.  He has now been appointed Health secretary in Trump's incoming cabinet.  Trump himself had previously belonged to the Reform Party. The former New York property developer had even considered running for president in the 2000 election under the banner of that movement - formed by former third-party presidential candidate Ross Perot, who won 19 per cent of the popular vote in 1992 but gained no electoral college votes. Perot was the most popular minority party candidate since former Republican president Teddy Roosevelt in 1912 ran as the Bull Moose Party candidate - carrying six states including California and coming second ahead of Republican William Taft. Australia has seen a rise in recent years of nominally independent politicians who have taken votes away from the two traditional parties of Labor and the Liberal-National coalition This situation is helped by a strong Green party who now have 12 senators and four members in the House of Representatives.  Zali Steggall (pictured) became the first 'teal' independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney's northern beaches at the 2019 election Meanwhile, independent candidates who run on strong climate platforms but are fiscally conservative have been labelled 'teal' candidates. This is because they have combined their 'green' views on climate with the traditional 'blue' approach of the centre-right Liberal Party on economics. Zali Steggall became the first teal independent to achieve huge success when she ousted former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat in Sydney's northern beaches at the 2019 election. In similar fashion, Monique Ryan won the traditionally Liberal seat from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 election.  She was one of seven teals elected, swelling the lower house crossbench to 16, with this tally including the four Greens, three conservative independents and progressives Andrew Wilkie and Helen Haines. Crowe's three-hour conversation with Rogan, which was first aired in August, has recently resurfaced in teal social media adverts. They are being pushed by Melbourne philanthropist Simon Holmes à Court, who founded Climate 200, which has given campaign funding to some teal candidates. Not all the 12 independents elected in 2022 were teals, however.  Maverick independent Bob Katter has just celebrated 50 years in parliament (pictured: being congratulated by prime minister Anthony Albanese) Dai Lee, a former state Liberal candidate, defeated former Labor frontbencher and former NSW Labor premier Kristina Keneally in the south-west Sydney seat of Fowler. And, of course, maverick Bob Katter who has just celebrated 50 years in parliament, spending 20 years as a Queensland state MP before serving the past three decades in federal parliament as the MP for the regional far north Queensland electorate of Kennedy.  Among his many mad-hat policies over the years include a bid to teach school kids how to fire rifles and a desire to build a missile shield across northern Australia. The House of Representatives crossbench grew to 17 in late 2022 when Andrew Gee quit the Nationals in protest at its opposition to the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.  The Greens and independents make up 11 per cent of the 151-member lower house - the highest proportion of non major party MPs since Federation in 1901.  Joe Rogan

The Australian government has issued a stern warning to horror fans flocking to cinemas to see the ultra-violent slasher film Terrifier 3, cautioning audiences about its extreme content and disturbing themes. The film, directed by Damien Leone, has drawn huge crowds since it's release on October 10, as it continues the blood-soaked saga of Art the Clown with more gruesome, stomach-churning scenes. The movie has broken box office records as horror enthusiasts are lured in by the film's reputation for intense violence and shock value. The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts has warned Australian audiences to prepare for scenes of graphic violence, dismemberment and disturbing themes that go well beyond typical horror fare. The film includes brutal depictions of murder using a variety of weapons, from chainsaws to axes and guns, resulting in explicit injury detail and copious amounts of blood. The warning also highlights that the movie portrays self-harm, cannibalism, animal cruelty and violence involving children, pushing the boundaries of what the most hardened horror fans has seen before. One of the film's more controversial moments includes a scene of implied masturbation coupled with self-harm, along with a shower scene that hints at sexual activity.  The Australian government has issued a stern warning to horror fans flocking to cinemas to see the ultra-violent slasher film Terrifier 3, cautioning audiences about its extreme content and disturbing themes  The film, directed by Damien Leone, has drawn huge crowds since it's release on October 10, as it continues the blood-soaked saga of Art the Clown with more gruesome, stomach-churning scenes  In addition, male genital nudity and obscured shots of female breast and buttock nudity have caused concern among viewers and the classification board alike. The film's R18+ rating in Australia is due to its high impact violence, blood, gore and explicit sexual content. Despite these warnings, audiences have turned out in droves. The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, and the Arts has warned Australian audiences to prepare for scenes of graphic violence, dismemberment and disturbing themes that go well beyond typical horror fare  Many cinema-goers in Sydney and Melbourne reportedly clapped and cheered during some of the film's most grotesque death scenes. This latest instalment of the Terrifier franchise is a continuation of the sadistic horror unleashed by Art the Clown, a character who has now become a modern horror icon for his relentless brutality. In Terrifier 3, Art's reign of terror continues, once again targeting Sienna Shaw who narrowly survived his attacks in the previous movie. Sienna, portrayed by actress Lauren LaVera, takes on Art in a deadly showdown that is as gory as it is horrifying, featuring scenes of decapitations, dismemberments and visceral body horror. Read More 'Traumatising' horror sequel leaves two Perth moviegoers unconscious and one injured The Terrifier franchise, which began in 2016, quickly gained a cult following due to its extreme violence and over-the-top death scenes. The first film, which saw Art the Clown mutilate a victim with a hacksaw, shocked audiences with its brutal kill sequences. The sequel, Terrifier 2, went viral last year after reports emerged that viewers were fainting and vomiting in cinemas due to its graphic content. Now, with Terrifier 3, Leone has doubled down on the carnage, taking the gore to new, unsettling levels. Despite Australia's strict film censorship laws, Terrifier 3 was approved for theatrical release with a strong warning attached. The film's notoriety has only heightened its appeal to horror fans, who continue to fill cinemas across the country. Earlier this month, two people fainted and fled for the exit when it hit a Perth cinema for early previews. According to multiple eye witness accounts, one young woman badly injured herself after she fell down the cinema stairs while fleeing the movie theatre. 'This is going to sound made up and I promise you it's not,' Australian horror film critic Emma Clarke began her review of David Leone's controversial new horror-slasher. The Rotten Tomatoes verified critic said two people fainted right in front of her during the screening she attended at Innaloo Cinemas in Perth over the weekend. The first fainted during the opening scene, she said in her film review shared to YouTube, and the second nearer to the end of the two-house spectacle. 'Can you tell me... why did two people feint right in front of me during that film?' she said. 'Both trying to run down the stairs to get to the bathrooms because they felt so queasy.' The horror film fanatic said she spoke to both people and tried to assist them because she was seated directly behind them. The first was a man, who left with a friend who came to check on him, and second Australian victim was a young woman. 'This poor girl gashed her head open as she fell down the stairs, I felt so bad for her. I went and checked on her afterwards,' Clarke claimed. 'She did get help. She was with her friend. It really shook me up too. It actually took me out of the film for the moment.' The reviewer, who has been sharing her thoughts on scary movies for the past four years, said she has never seen audience members have such a visceral reaction to a film. Many cinema-goers in Sydney and Melbourne reportedly clapped and cheered during some of the film's most grotesque death scenes Clarke described the third installment of Leone's series — which is set to open nationally on Thursday, October 11 — as ' fun, intense, gory, disturbed, and over the top.' 'I'm not used to horror actually hurting people, so that was a really strange experience,' she said. 'Before anyone says they're paid actors, I saw the girl and she had injuries. They were both very young people. I feel really awful about it to be honest.' 'It was a very scary moment trying to help them out.' SydneyMelbourne

Australian politicians are almost always opting to fly with Qantas on taxpayer-funded trips, despite Virgin offering cheaper tickets. Federal MPs flew with the national carrier for 80 per cent of work trips last year despite it not always being the cheapest route, according to travel data provided to the government. While politicians and their staffers are required to book the cheapest flight, it also has to be the most efficient, with Qantas offering the most routes between major cities. MPs are banned from accruing frequent flyer points on taxpayer-funded trips like ordinary Aussies can, but they can can receive lifetime status credits, which allows access to airport lounges and flight upgrades. 'How else can one explain the extraordinary dominance of Qantas in securing bookings by parliamentarians and their staff?' Myriam Robin wrote in an opinion piece for the Australian Financial Review. 'There's nothing like accruing status credits on someone else's dime.' Transport Minister Catherine King has since committed to a review of flight bookings by government officials which will be conducted by the Department of Finance this year, despite there being just two months left of 2024. Politicians' preference for Qantas may also be put down to the airline's exclusive invite-only 'Chairman's Lounge'. Qantas and the Albanese government have both denied the airline enjoys any disproportionate level of influence over the country's political classes. A Daily Mail Australia audit of the members' interest registers - in both the House of Representatives and the Senate - revealed almost 93 per cent of the nation's leaders have been 'gifted' membership to the lavish, all-inclusive lounge. The high profile ranks of government giftees include Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as well as every member of his 22-person Cabinet, his seven-person Outer Ministry and all 12 assistant ministers. While most politicians declared their Qantas' privileges as a 'gift', Labor MP Marion Scrymgour listed her membership as her 'Chairman Lounge entitlement'. Daily Mail Australia in August revealed that nearly every single federal politician in the country has accepted free membership of Qantas' exclusive Chairman's Lounge. And it's not just politicians on the take, with more than 60 MPs - including Marles, Chalmers, King, Bill Shorten, Zali Steggall and Tanya Plibersek - disclosing their spouses have also been granted unfettered, independent access to Qantas' luxurious members only lounge. Often touted as 'the most exclusive club in the country', membership to the Chairman's Lounge has long been veiled in secrecy. Even the entrances to each of the country's six opulent VIP clubs - in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and Perth airports - are suitably discreet. Though, once inside, the designer lounges are immediately more ostentatious, with free à la carte fine dining, table service, a decadent selection of wines and Champagne and a discreet army of dedicated lounge attendants. Membership to the club is 'priceless' - it cannot be bought for any amount of money nor obtained via any amount of frequent flyers points. Instead, each member is hand-picked and approved by the company's chief executive and chairman. Qantas
